Obtanium Reference System Details

Obtanium systems are designed for high-end workflows, allowing a large number of HD sources or allowing for high resolutions and framerates. The following article provides additional information for those seeking to build such a system.

INPUT CAPABILITIES

  • Capture Card Sources - Up to 24 x HD or 6 x 4K at 60p
  • IP Sources - Up to 12 x HD or 6 x 4K NDI or SRT
  • Instant Replay - Up to 8 x HD or 2 x 4K at 60p
  • Video Callers - Multiple Zoom callers or 8 x vMix Calls
  • Other Sources - Up to 50 (Live audio, web browsers, video files, audio files, titles and images)

OUTPUT CAPABILITIES

  • Capture Card - Up to 4 x HD or 1 x 4K at 60p
  • Graphics Card - Up to 2 x HD or 1 x 4K at 60Hz
  • IP (NDI / SRT) - Up to 4 x HD or 1 x 4K at 60p
  • Stream (RTMP / LiveLan) - Up to 5 x destinations

EXAMPLE WORKFLOWS
Not all capabilities listed above can be achieved at the same time. Here are two example workflows running vMix Max on an Obtanium system:

EXAMPLE 1 - HD PRODUCTION (1080p60)

INPUT
  • 18 x SDI cameras (via Decklink Quad 2 capture cards)
  • 3 x Full bandwidth NDI sources

  • 8 x Instant replay (using above SDI sources and medium buffer)
  • 6 x Dante audio channels

  • 2 x SDI (via Decklink Quad 2 capture card)

EXAMPLE 2 - 4K PRODUCTION (2160p60)

INPUT
  • 6 x SDI cameras (via Decklink 8K Pro capture cards)
  • 2 x Instant replay (using above SDI sources and maximum buffer)
  • 6 x GT Titles
  • 5 x Video files
  • 5 x Audio files
  • 1 x Web browser
OUTPUT
  • 1 x SDI (via Decklink 8K Pro capture card)
  • 1 x Fullscreen (via graphics card)

HARDWARE
The Obtanium system requires specialised hardware. Deviating from the hardware noted below is possible, but may result in incompatibilities and or reduced capacity or performance.

SPECIAL NOTES
  • CPU and Motherboard available at Newegg at time of publication
  • BIOS version to be updated to R07 or higher
  • PCIe Slots 7, 3, 2 and 1 to be set to x16 mode in BIOS
  • Resizable BAR to be enabled in BIOS
  • Ethernet Port 1 to be used for Full-bandwidth NDI workflows
  • This system has 10G network adapters - A 10G Network is required for full-bandwidth NDI workflows
  • PCIe slots are numbered from 7 down to 1, starting at the top
  • When using Xeon W-2500X series CPU, PCIe slots 6, 5 and 4 are disabled and the 4x memory slots furthest from the CPU are disabled
  • Installing the GPU in PCIe slot 7 allows slot 3, 2 and 1 to be used for capture cards
  • Motherboard may not support case USB header cables
  • Disable VGA display adapter in Device Manager
  • For greater storage capacity, the Samsung 990 PRO 4TB M.2 2280 NVMe PCIe 4.0 can be used, however for instant replay this may require increasing the replay recording buffer (buffer adjustment available from vMix 28)
